Ethiopia's Resistance to Imperialism

What do you think was the most important or significant outcome from Ethiopia's resistance to Italy colonizing their country? What can we learn from it today?

  1. The significant outcomes from Ethiopia's resistance to Italy's colonization are that it was was not only one of the few, but as far as to my knowledge the only resistance and no other African state, city, village or town did not do what the Ethiopians did against the Italians that were going to colonize there country. The thing we learn from it today is that no one should just try and take things by force and we should let people run their own life and that it's not true what the media says how all African countries are poor or can't do stuff or didn't do anything for themselves because this resistance just goes to show you how strong a government/leaders can be to protect their palaces and home land so they can run stuff how they wanted to run it.

  3. If only it was as easy as it sounds. "leaving well enough alone..." But reality says people are greedy and narcissistic. Even now, what only matters to us is what we don't have or what isn't including us. People of disadvantage are luck you have any hope of winning against artillery that is much greater then anything you've ever seen before it. Winning such conflict must be very historical for Ethiopia I assume.

  4. What i thought was significant and important was that it is very valuable to have a ruler that is knowledgeble about other cultures/other groups of people beside there own. the ethiopian ruler menelik had knowledge of the europeans true intent too enslave and take over the land this knowledge helped them be prepared for the europeans and be able to resist against them. a knowlegeble ruler is very beneficial to its people.

  5. the outcome of Ethiopia's resistance from the Italians were that it was one of the few African resistant movements that were successful, it was the first time African rebeled against Europeans and it encouraged African nations to become imperial.

  6. The most important outcome from Ethiopia's resistance to Italy colonizing their country was they were definitely free. They had no country to look up to and perform orders. The Italians were the weakest in Europe (military speaking). Although the Ethiopians were outnumbered. They still declared war against Italy. The result out of that was the Ethiopians won (they got help from the British). After that they were left alone by the Italians. Also, Ethiopia is one of the oldest country in the world not to mention oldest independent country in Africa. The battle of Adwa was most likely a great powerful memory that showed how hard their people worked in order to be independent.

  7. I agree with the above post. When a country is colonized by another country a lot of changes occur for the country that’s being colonized. For a country to resist being colonized it's very significant to the future of that country. Having a nation resist being colonized saves a lot of changes that could have occurred for example the language, culture etc could have been affected. Luckily Ethiopia wasn't colonized by the Italians.
If you really love something you would fight for it, the Ethiopian government really loved the culture/people/country they didn't want to make it easy for the Italians to take over. What we learn from this is if you really want something you will fight for it. It teaches us to fight for what you think is right...and be smart, know what’s happening around you, be aware of what’s going around in the world! Menelik the president of Ethiopia at the time was a very knowledgeable man who was able to use his knowledge to save his country from being colonized. Nobody wants their country to be colonized, knowledge is key. I learn that I should do my studies...be thankful that we have free education here in Canada.

  8. But then again, like many countries in East Africa, Ethiopia is undergoing much hardship.. so it too, should be looked at whether the government is stepping up as it should, to not only protect culture and such, but the quality of life for the people? What life's with culture when that life is strife with much hardhsip, disease, death, ridden with poverty, and so much more.. There's much that needs to be done to preserve and protect the culture but also, the people.

  9. the fact that Ethiopia resisted Italy and were successful, i would say the most important outcome was the hope and strength that the Ethiopian people showed the rest of the countries in Africa that it was possible. also that they were free people is clearly a huge outcome.
what we can learn today is that no matter what size your army (voice, will power, passion, etc.) the amount of heart/confidence you have can overcome a country (person, society, institution, etc.)

  10. The most important outcome from Ethiopia's resistance to Italy colonizing their country was they were definitely free and showed other African countries to stand up to the Europeans. I feel like if Ethiopia didn’t have the courage to fight, then the others wouldn’t have either.
