The Nama and Herero Resistant

Who lead the Nama and Herero resistance and what was the outcome

  1. Samuel Maharero lead the Nama and the Herero. All Herero's people over the age of seven were forced to wear a metal disc with the their labour registration number.

It took the German colonial government until 1908 to fully re-establish its authority over the territory.

  2. The Nama chief was Hendrik Witbooi while the Herero chief was Samuel Maharero. Both of these men led the resistance.
It was one of the greatest tragedies in South West Africa. The German settlers stole land that belonged to the Herero and Nama farmers and put them in debt. The Herero and Nama people wanted their lives back so they decided to go to war with the Germans. The Africans were able to get 100 German settlers and 13 German soldiers killed. Those numbers were nothing compared to the amount of Nama and Herero people that the German people killed. From 80 000 of the Africans there was only 15000 left after the war, its known to be the first genocide of the 20th Century, crazy stuff.

  3. The Nama chief, Hendrik Witbooi led his people into war against the Germans that where on their land. Soon after the Herero leader, Samuel Maherero led his people to war as well. 1907 rebellion was done after three year most of the Nama and Herero had been wiped out. Some call it the first genocide of the 20th century, only 10 000 Nama and 15 000 Herero were left.

  4. The Nama chief, Hendrik Witbooi led the Herero Resistance, the outcome of this tragic genocide was a total, between 24,000 up to 100,000 Herero perished along with 10,000 Nama. The genocide was characterized by widespread death by starvation and thirst by preventing the fled Herero from returning from the Namib Desert. With the closure of concentration camps all surviving Herero were distributed as labourers for settlers in the German colony, and from that time on, all Herero's over the age of seven were forced to wear a metal disc with the their labour registration number.
